As I have done the last two years, I am taking part in the 30 Days of Characters challenge this year. This is the twenty-seventh entry for this year.
In all of Hopeston, NY, there is one bad place, and it is very bad.
Little Mercy Anne didn't know about this place, and she didn't know that no good ever comes from following a will o' the wisp. So she did exactly that. She followed a will o' the wisp straight to the old apple orchard where nothing good can grow and people sometimes don't come out when they go in.
Little Mercy was a lucky little girl, though, since someone was there to stop her.
"You'll not want to go in there, milady", said the man, a knight by his garb.
"Who are you?"
The knight bowed deeply. "I am Samathanarias a'Derethis, knight-errant of the House of Greentree in the Seelie Court."
"Sam... Greentree..."
The knight smiled. "As you wish."
From that day forward, for years to come, barely a day went by that Mercy and Sam didn't see each other. He taught her the ways and laws of the fey, their songs and their games.
Mercy loved her friend Sam with all her heart. One day, though, she met two men who would change her life.
As a teenager, Mercy had run away from home.
She met a young man named Matthew, who took her in. The two fell madly in love, and Sam knew his Little Mercy was, in a way, lost to him. But he was happy because she was happy.
Mercy had also taken to shoplifting. When she stole the wrong book from the wrong store, the owner of the store, a man named Ezekiel Corvus, recognized her for what she was: a sorcerer, gifted in the ways of magic. Instead of turning her in, he offered her a job and training.
Matthew didn't really like her talk of magic and spells, which he called her "spooky shit", but he tolerated it.
Little did he know that the "spooky shit" would take his Mercy away from him.
Little did anyone know that T'tharnn was to return...
